Long, Narrow Garden Ideas - How to Transform Your Small Plot

small garden

If you live in or near a city, there’s a high chance your garden is on the smaller side. Some people might feel limited by this, but at Landscape World we believe you can do wonders with a smaller garden - especially one that’s long and narrow.

With this in mind, we’ve put together some top tips to help you maximise your outdoor space:

1. Create a living wall

Living walls are one of the biggest garden trends this year, and it’s easy to see why. They are essentially vertical gardens where plants are rooted into structures attached to your garden wall, giving you more space on the ground.

Living walls consist of modular panels containing all sorts of plants, with annuals, herbs, perennials and vegetables in particular providing a lovely splash of colour.

For a similar yet hassle-free effect, you could even decorate your walls with a range of hanging plant pots.

2. Plant beds on one side

If you still want some plant beds on the ground, why not plant them to one side? As well as creating the illusion of a wider garden, it would give you more space to create a path made from cobbles and pebbles or paving setts

3. Divide your garden ‘invisibly’

Rather than dividing your garden with bulky, space-consuming hedges that are all one colour, divide your garden ‘invisibly’ using different coloured plants to give it a more spacious, open feel.

If you want to break up long and thin grass areas, you might want to consider subtly changing from lawn to meadow.

4. Balance out the grass with a paving

We recommend balancing out a long plot with a patio area. As well as helping to widen it, it would also make a lovely addition to your garden - somewhere you can put outdoor chairs and a table, a BBQ and even a fire pit during the autumn and winter months.

At Landscape World, you can buy paving by the metre. This means you can purchase as much or as little as you need, something which is ideal for smaller gardens. From lovely limestone to stunning sandstone, we have plenty to choose from.
