Top Tips for Achieving the Perfect Summer Patio

With great weather just around the corner, having a pristine and comfortable patio area is a necessity. Patios are a perfect place to relax and bask in the summer sun, however, following the long and wet winter months, sometimes a bit of a refresh is in order.

Clean your Paving Stones

We have all experienced the green moss and dirt build up that grows on patios over the winter months. We also all know that cleaning these paving stones isn't the easiest job.

Cleaning patio paving stones is easy if you have a jet washer, but if you are in the majority of people who do not have one, our top tip is to grab yourself a stiff broom and some bleach or patio cleaner. Before beginning your clean, make sure that you move any and all furniture and plant pots off the area, as the cleaner can cause discolouration and damage.

First, sweep the patio with a stiff brush to remove as much of the dirt as possible. Next, wet the patio paving stones and then follow with a bleach/patio cleaner and water solution and leave on the area for a minimum of 15 minutes. When 15 minutes are up, then get your stiff brush and scrub the area. The staining and dirt should come away relatively easy. Following your scrubbing, finish with a final rinse with the hose and your paving stones should look brand new!

 Paving Circles or Features

If you are looking to update the look and feel of your patio, a great and easy way is the addition of a paving circle. Paving circles are detailed areas of paving that are ideal for complimenting outdoor furniture such as tables, chairs or even bird feeders.

Garden Furniture

Garden furniture is the most important aspect of your patio. It is important that you pick furniture that is the right size for your patio. If you have a smaller patio, for example, a larger table and chair set will only emphasise your patios small size. You are better going with a smaller set or a comfortable outdoor sofa.

There is a massive range of garden furniture available in all shapes, sizes and colours. Whether you are looking for a smart dining table or somewhere to lie down and sunbathe, you are sure to find the set that is right for your garden.

Another aspect of garden furniture that is often ignored is an umbrella or shaded area. In the height of British Summer Time, many people will be looking to sit in the shade for at least part of the day. Having a large parasol or shaded area is an essential, particularly if you have children or you are vulnerable to sunburn.

Plants and Flowers

Plants and flowers are the things that will really bring your patio area to life. No matter your preference on flowers of plants, having an area of greenery is guaranteed to make your outdoor area pop. Hanging baskets are a great way to feature flowers in your garden if you do not have much floor space.

Furthermore, make sure that you only add flowers and plants to your garden that you are going to be able to take care of. If you know you are limited on time, then choose plants and flowers that are easy to grow and care for. Having dead or dying plants in your garden is certain to ruin the atmosphere.

Add Some Privacy

Many people avoid sitting in their garden due to a lack of privacy. This can be easily combated with the addition of some wooden panelling. This panelling can be used for hanging baskets or creepers to grow on or could have further decorative items added to it. It can also double up shade as opposed to having a parasol.
