How to Remove Weeds from Your Patio or Driveway

Weeds really are every gardener’s worst nightmare. No matter how much you try to get rid of them, they just always seem to creep back up! Weeds found in your patio or driveway can be especially tricky to remove or prevent, but we’re going to look at some tried-and-tested methods that could help.

Sweep regularly

Sweeping your paving regularly is one way of keeping weeds at bay - by doing so, you are brushing away seeds that would otherwise grow into weeds!

If you want to remove deep-rooted weeds such as dandelions, you need to remove their tap root. This Patio Weed Brush from Wickes features a sharp tip that is able to work through your paving’s tiny cracks and crevices. As well as removing the root, you are also picking out seeds that may have fallen down the cracks.

Pressure wash

After sweeping, we recommend using a pressure washer to remove those seeds and roots that might still be lurking. If it’s done properly, this could massively reduce the amount of weeds found in your patio or driveway, and potentially remove them all together! Take a look at our pressure wash guide to learn how to do it effectively.

Last resort: weed killer

When advising our customers on the best ways to avoid weeds growing in their patio, we often suggest non-chemical methods. Despite this, we understand that weed killer might be required in extreme cases! Most of the time it’s fine, but you must never use salt or bleach, as this could cause damage to surrounding plants, and potentially affect the colour of your paving. If you are going to use a weed killer, we recommend using it down the sides of your patio, rather than spreading it across the surface.
